Fuerteventura, the second biggest of the Canary Islands, is the perfect holiday destination for solo travelers, couples, families, and adventure seekers. With a rugged coastline, charming towns, and pristine beaches, it's no wonder Fuerteventura is a popular island year-round.
But, as the Canary Islands' longest island, you want to make sure you're staying in the best area to meet your needs. Do you want perfect surfing waves? Great nightlife? Or a kid-friendly beach for paddling?
In this guide to where to stay in Fuerteventura, I'm going to take you through my favorite areas of the island and the top hotels, so you can plan the perfect sun-filled holiday.
Getting to Fuerteventura
The two main ways of getting to Fuerteventura are by plane and ferry. Several flights are arriving at Fuerteventura Airport from all over Europe and mainland Spain. Flying is the quickest and easiest option if you're coming from afar.
However, if you're traveling around the Canary Islands, a ferry is a wonderful way to explore them. Prices are often fairly cheap and you can quickly arrive from nearby islands such as Lanzarote.
Best Time to Visit Fuerteventura
One of the reasons why the Canary Islands are so popular for holidays is that they get year-round sun. If you want to enjoy the lovely beaches, then the best time to visit is between May and October. The temperatures are usually around 80°F and rarely reach the very hot temperatures of mainland Spain or the Balearic Islands, such as Mallorca.
The winter months are another popular time to visit Fuerteventura, especially for those looking to escape the gray of northern Europe. You may not be able to sunbathe all the time, but you'll definitely have milder weather and blue skies!

1. Where to Stay in Fuerteventura for First-Timers and a Vibrant Atmosphere: Corralejo
Corralejo is a bustling resort town in the north of the island known for its pretty beaches and picturesque coastline. It's around a 30-minute drive from Fuerteventura Airport in Puerto del Rosario and close to the neighboring, tiny island of Lobos.
It's quite a built-up town, offering everything you could need for a perfect holiday. There are a couple of stunning beaches nearby which are ideal for swimming and trying water sports such as surfing, kiteboarding, and windsurfing.
It's a good option if you're looking for not-too-crazy nightlife but a fun atmosphere and plenty to do.
Things to Do in Corralejo
Visit the Corralejo Natural Park: This is one of the most beautiful natural parks in Fuerteventura. The sand dunes are incredible and will make you think you're on Mars! The beaches towards the north of the park are bright white with turquoise water whereas those to the south have red sand and deep blue waters.
Try Water Sports: Flag Beach in Corralejo is the perfect place to try water sports. There are lots of schools and shops where you can rent equipment.
Acua Water Park Corralejo: This fun water park is the only one in Fuerteventura. It's ideal for older kids and adults!
Day Trip to Lobos: Lobos is an incredible island located off the north of Fuerteventura. The water is crystal clear and it's the perfect day escape.
Walk around the Old Town: Corralejo Old Town is made up of a square and some beautiful cobbled streets. It's small but there are a couple of great restaurants and bars to discover.

2. Where to Stay in Fuerteventura for Families with Kids: Caleta de Fuste
Caleta de Fuste is a beautiful little resort town nestled on the east coast of Fuerteventura. It's changed a lot in the last few decades from a town that no one knew about to a popular holiday destination. There's a cute marina that's perfect for having an evening drink or dinner as you watch the colorful fishing boats go by.
The main reason it's such a popular spot for families is the calm bays nearby. They're curved, meaning they're excellent for little ones to swim in or to try stand-up paddle surfing, but those looking for waves for water sports should head somewhere else on the island.
Things to Do in Caleta de Fuste
Go on a Boat Trip: There are lots of great boat trips on offer from the marina, including a catamaran half-day cruise along the stunningly rugged coast.
Go Snorkeling: Caleta de Fuste is the perfect place in Fuerteventura to go snorkeling. The calmer waters are home to all sorts of marine life.
Eat Seafood on the Beachfront: Restaurante La Frasquita is a great place to try freshly caught seafood with a beautiful view.
Go Shopping: There are a couple of unique souvenir shops in Caleta de Fuste as well as some modern malls to suit all kinds of retail therapy.
Play Golf: Whether that be mini gold of the beach or a full course in the nearby Fuerteventura Golf Club, Caleta de Fuste is ideal for all the family.

3. Where to Stay in Fuerteventura for a Quiet Escape and Water Sports: Costa Calma
Costa Calma is on the southeast coast of Fuerteventura, around 30 minutes from the airport. Beach lovers will adore Costa Calma thanks to its long stretches of pristine sand and deep blue waters.
As the name suggests, there's a laid-back atmosphere to this part of the island but don't go thinking the ocean is calm. Costa Calma is one of the most popular places for water sports enthusiasts, especially in July and August when the winds get up. It's perfect for windsurfing and kite surfing.
Things to Do in Costa Calma
Go to the Beach: Some of the most impressive beaches are in and around Costa Calma. The main beach is beautiful and perfect for a long walk along. There are also two little coves called Playa Esmeralda and Playa Esmeralda Norte.
Check Out Sotavento Lagoon: Sotavento Lagoon is a must-visit if you're in Costa Calma. It's a stunning lagoon formed by a sand bar that's split in the center. It's best to go at high tide when the lagoon is full of water and you can swim.
Visit Jandia Natural Park: This rugged park is beautiful and amazing to go walking around. The scenery is stunning and you get amazing views of the long beaches. You can see all types of animals and migrating birds too.
Go to Oasis Park Fuerteventura. This is Fuerteventura's Zoo and a great place to take kids. It's also a good thing to do if the weather is bad or the waves are too high.

This wonderful hotel is located on Sotavento Beach and has amazing views over the landscape from its beautiful pool. 2 restaurants serve organic and local dishes and there's also a fitness center, bar, and free parking.

These bungalows are located just 500m from Costa Calma Beach. They have an outdoor pool with a bar, a sun terrace, and a beautiful garden. There's a spa and fitness area and they offer surfing and diving courses for an extra charge.

This cute little apartment is located 1km away from Costa Calma on a quiet street. It has a bedroom, kitchenette, and bathroom and views from the terrace onto the large, shared pool.

4. Where to Stay in Fuerteventura for Couples: El Cotillo
This little fishing village on the northwest coast of the island is a bit of a hidden gem. It's much quieter than some of the resort towns in Fuerteventura and has a laid-back feel. In fact, it's probably my favorite place on the island.
El Cotillo is known for its stunning beaches. Unlike other areas, it has both long stretches of sand and tiny little coves to explore. Playa de los Lagos is a popular and beautiful beach with sparkling white sand and turquoise water. A little further up the coast is Playa Concha, a stunning stretch of sand with perfect water.
Although many of the beaches are protected by a nearby reef, meaning the waves are often gentle, some of the larger ones still get some good surf and are popular spots for water sports lovers.
Things to Do in El Cotillo
Walk along to the Cliffs and Lighthouse: Faro de Tostón is a cute lighthouse to the north of El Cotillo, accessible by car or foot. It's a great place to get views over Lanzarote and the ocean. Make sure you go at sunset to make it even more beautiful!
Enjoy the Natural Swimming Pools at Playa de Los Charcos: You'll find these amazing natural swimming pools just a short drive away from El Cotillo. They really are incredible, with bright turquoise water that's protected from the surrounding rocks. They're worth the little journey there.
Walk Around Town: El Cotillo is one of the best places to see traditional Canarian architecture. There's a little square in the center of town that's surrounded by narrow streets.
Eat Delicious Tapas: Santa Ana del Cotillo is one of the best restaurants in El Cotillo. They do lots of traditional and local tapas dishes, including papas arrugadas which are a must-try if you're visiting Fuerteventura! Make sure you book in advance.

No, it's possible to get to everywhere on this list via bus. Of course, they're a little less direct than if you hire a car but they run regularly and to most areas of the island. Another great way to get around is on a bike, especially if you only want to travel around the area where you're staying. There are lots of hire shops all over the island.

Yes! I wouldn't say it's one of the top places to stay in Fuerteventura but it's certainly worth a visit. It's changed a lot over the past few years and the beaches, cuisine, and culture are brilliant.
📅 How Long Do You Need to Visit Fuerteventura?
A week or more is a good amount of time to visit Fuerteventura. It takes a little longer than 4 hours to reach the island by plane from northern Europe, so it's quite a long trip for a weekend. Although, if you're up for the journey, the Canary Islands can be perfect for a long weekend sunny break!

Fuerteventura isn't as expensive as some other Spanish islands, such as Ibiza, but you can still find luxury in Fuerteventura. There are plenty of amazing 5-star hotels and more upmarket restaurants.
